APUSH Summer Assignment 2019
Welcome to APUSH! This year will be a very busy one as we prepare for the AP exam in May 2020. This course is a rigorous college-level course that will require extensive background knowledge in US History and well-developed historical analysis skills.
AP US History is a survey course designed to explore the major themes in American History from pre-Columbian times to the 21st Century. Because the course encompasses such a broad scope, assigning some of the earlier material during the summer allows the class to be a more reasonable pace during the school year. We will not be able to accomplish everything during class time alone and it is important that class time is spent focusing on the development of AP Skills. As a result, being a student in APUSH will require a great deal of outside work coupled with effective time-management skills, as many of you will be very busy with other courses and activities as well.
To demonstrate your abilities as a self-directed learner, every APUSH student will be required to complete the following summer assignment that will be due the first full week of class (Friday, August 23). The summer assignment is broken into 4 parts plus a Summer Homework Quiz on Periods 1 & 2:
• Part 1 – Reading Chapter 1, 2, & 3 in AMSCO prep book (suggest taking notes)
• Part 2 – Period 1 & 2 Review
• Part 3 – Map Activity
• Part 4 – Memorize eras (due by Summer Homework Reading Quiz & begin memorizing the Presidents (Due by the end of the 1st quarter)
Needed Resources: You should pick up the first two from the library before you leave for summer break!
• Textbook – The American Pageant, 16th edition*
• Prep-book – AMSCO United States History: Preparing for the Advanced Placement Examination (2015 or 2018 edition)*
• Access to Howard Zinn’s, A People’s History of the United States - https://www.historyisaweapon.com/zinnapeopleshistory.html
• Access to the internet
o Class website – parfittapush.weebly.com
• Binder and notebook paper for notes
• Small post-its
* Both books we use are very good and make for fantastic resources, but the book we discuss most often in class and the one we use for our guided readings and reading quizzes is the AMSCO prep book. We use this book predominantly because it does help streamline all information and is a bit more succinct than the textbook.
Directions for Assignments
Due Friday, August 23
Assignment 1 - Carefully READ Chapters 1, 2, & 3 of your AMSCO prep book.
• Post-it notes & questions – this is a mandatory assignment - use the post-its to write questions you have about different sections of the text or to write down a quick note to help you remember important topics as you read. When we go over these chapters in class, we always begin by answering all questions you have about the reading.
• Suggested Supplemental Assignments –
1. Take Cornell style notes OR complete the AMSCO guides (AMSCO guides can be found on the class website in each unit. The notes or the guides can be used to help you earn extra credit for all unit tests. Each chapter completed will be +5 points for your unit exam. Quiz and test corrections can only be done once notes are taken for chapters covered!)
2. Read Chapters 1- 4 from The American Pageant
3. Read Chapters 1-3 from Howard Zinn
Note Taking Guide
a) First: Read a section of your textbook chapter
i. Read just enough to keep an understanding of the material. Do not take notes, but rather focus on understanding the material.
ii. It is tempting to take notes as you are reading the first time, but this is not an efficient technique: you are likely to take down too much information and simply copy without understanding
b) Second: Review the material
i. Locate the main ideas, as well as important sub-points
ii. Set the book aside - Paraphrase this information: Putting the textbook information in your own words forces you to become actively involved with the material
c) Third: write the paraphrased ideas as your notes
i. Do not copy information directly from the textbook
ii. Add only enough detail to understand
iii. Review, and compare your notes with the text, and ask yourself if you truly understand
Assignment 2 – Period 1 & 2 Review
• These can be found at the end of Chapter 1, 2, & 3 in your AMSCO prep book. Write your answers for the review on the worksheets attached. Consider these like practice quizzes since they are set up exactly how your unit exams will be set up (minus an essay)
Assignment 3 – Map Activity
• Follow the directions on the attached Map Activity Worksheet. You will be graded on accuracy, completeness, and neatness, so TAKE YOUR TIME!
Assignment 4 – Historical Eras and Presidents
• This assignment might seem crazy and pointless, BUT by knowing all of the Presidents and Eras early in the school year, it will make it that much easier for you to focus on the issues that each of these leaders faced. The mental knowledge of knowing the presidents will provide a framework for additional concepts and topics.
• So in building our “body” of U.S. History, the presidents and eras are the initial “skeleton”, and events, issues and concepts like the Embargo Act (Jefferson), the Trail of Tears (Jackson), or the League of Nations (Wilson) are the “sinew,” “organs” and “skin.”
• In other words, you will be a little bit ahead of the game and will do that much better on the AP exam in May!!! Both of these lists can be found at the end of this packet.
Summer Homework Quiz – Friday, August 23
• This quiz will be given at the end of the 1st whole week of class (Friday, August 23). This way if you have any questions about what you went over during the summer, you should have plenty of time to ask.
• This quiz will be set up slightly differently than all other quizzes because it will be combination of multiple choice, historical eras, and mapping.

This is not the exact version of the textbook, but it will give you the chance to complete the summer homework. It does mean that the page numbers will be a bit off!
